The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to put on hold for a week the pronouncement of its judgement on the bull-taming sport on a request made by the Centre.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi rushed to the apex court on Friday morning to make an urgent mentioning before a bench presided over by Justice Dipak Misra.
He made a reference to the ongoing protests at Chennai’s Marina Beach, and said that people are passionate about Jallikattu.
“The court may not deliver its judgement for a week. We are facing immense problems at the moment. We are trying to find a solution. We (Centre) are in talks with Tamil Nadu.
There is unusual difficulty and it may take some time to resolve,” he submitted.
The bench had reserved its judgement on December 5.
A batch of petitions, filed by the Animal Welfare Board of India and others, including some NGOs, challenged a notification issued by the Union government in January 2016, allowing the use of bulls in Jallikattu on the ground that it was contrary to the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
