The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre to ensure all state education boards comply with its direction to make environment education a compulsory subject in school curriculum across the country.
The apex court also asked the Union government to constitute a core committee to monitor the process.
“Let the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) be the nodal agency to see that our directions are complied with. The MHRD will bring all the stakeholders on a common platform so that they can share their views and also put forth difficulties in implementing the court order. We will proceed against the states that have not complied with our orders,” a bench of Chief Justice T S Thakur and Justice A M Khanwilkar said.
The court was hearing a petition filed by environmentalist M C Mehta in 1991, asking for a directive to make study of environment a compulsory subject in schools and colleges.
