Allegations of sexual harassment surfaced at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B), the premier engineering and technology institution at Powai in Mumbai.
Some male students have alleged that a senior, who has since graduated, had sexually harassed them.
The students had in the past written to the IIT-B administration about the issue but neither did the institution take any action nor did they complain to the police.
The students had also complained to Dean of Student Affairs, Soumyo Mukherjee. The IIT-B management has refused to comment on the issue.
The victims have now started posting on Facebook under the page "IIT Bombay Diaries-Confessions".
Former students have sent tweets to Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and the Mumbai Police about the complaints from current students.
One victim posted: "Here so many cases that are being hidden. But that is because I, a victim, wanted to protect my identity. Yes, I wanted punishment, I wanted it so bad, but not by a mob who is looking and hunting for my name to associate with the crime. Yes, I wanted punishment, but not by police who will notify my parents about my misfortune and ask me questions to degrade and humiliate me. You have no idea of the courage it takes to speak even in confidence, so don't come out with your pitchforks and demand victims to speak up."
"If this case goes out of the insti, it has to be directly with the government. No private third parties involved. We CAN contact the government directly. Let there be legal proceedings by the "Law and Order". If it's a crime in Insti, it's a national crime too (sic)," another post stated.
According to reports, the senior was a teaching assistant for the first and second-year students and managed the institution's cultural festival 'Mood Indigo'.
The allegations were publicised using a page called IIT Bombay Diaries-CONFESSIONS on social networking platform Facebook.
