Stakes of Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde rose further within the Congress on Thursday with party president Sonia Gandhi nominating him as permanent invitee to the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the highest decision-making body of the organisation.

Shinde’s induction was with immediate effect after senior party leader K S Rao created a vacancy by voluntarily quitting. Rao, who was a permanent invitee to the CWC, had made a request to the Congress president to relieve him from the post after he was recently made Textile Minister.
Shinde, who remained Power Minister in the two successive governments of the United Progressive Alliance for almost six years, was made Union Home Minister in 2012.

He later became Leader of the House in Lok Sabha, replacing former Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee following his election as President.
