More than 60 shops were gutted and goods worth several crores were damaged in a major fire at the Crawford Market, one of the oldest, biggest and busiest wholesale and retail markets, on Sunday, ahead of the Deepavali festival.

More than 12 fire tenders and jumbo water tankers were rushed to the spot.

However, there were no reports of any casualties.  Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Chief Fire Officer PS Rahangdale were present at the spot during the operations.
