A Special Court in Silvassa sentenced former resident deputy collector (RDC) of the region J K Jain to three years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 15,000 in a bribery case.

In an official communique, the CBI citing details of the case stated that in 2007, a small-time farmer Amrut Bhai Patel approached the Mumbai unit to file a complaint against Silvassa RDC; the revenue office was demanding a bribe of Rs 60,000 in lieu of issuing insurance and permission in a sale and purchase land deal.

A trap was laid by CBI officials and RDC Jain was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe money; the marked currency was also recovered from him.

During the trial, the CBI prosecutor questioned eight witnesses. On Friday, Special Judge Bhoiraj Patil of Silvassa Court after hearing both sides awarded a rigorous imprisonment and imposed two penalties under two separate charges, the CBI statement added.
