Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s illness has put a question mark over Rahul Gandhi’s “imminent” elevation and a subsequent reshuffle of the party organisation.

Rahul was tipped to succeed 69-year-old Sonia as the Congress president by September, but the exercise now appears to be put off till October or November.

A senior leader said Rahul’s elevation could even be pushed to next year as Congress leaders would be busy with the elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa, scheduled for early 2017.

“Doctors have advised the Congress president complete rest for six weeks. Any changes in the organisation are ruled out till she remains indisposed. No meeting of AICC or CWC is scheduled,” a senior party leader said.
