The panchayat in the Kanesara village of Patan taluka in North Gujarat has devised its own way of enforcing prohibition in this dry state where bachchus lovers not only have to shell out the “fine” for consuming liquor but remain perched on tree-top for 24 hours.

Village Head ( Sarpanch) A S Thakor said a “penalty” of Rs 1,000 is imposed on those consuming liquor while it will be Rs 5,000 for those who manufacture it. A Rs 1,000 “penalty” is also imposed on the drunken person entering the village as a guest to have a tipple. In addition to penalty, the person consuming liquor is asked to spend 24 hours on a tree, Thakor said.
