Sudipta Sen, chairman of Saradha Group that allegedly cheated thousands of poor investors in West Bengal and other states, was on Sunday remanded in 10-day police custody amid noisy protests outside the court.
Sen was brought from Dum Dum jail in the morning to be produced before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Debdeep Manna. Police sought 14 days’ custody.
Sudipta, who was pursued by mediapersons while hastily exiting the court through a backdoor, said that “everything will be clear in the next three months”. He said he would cooperate with the investigating authorities and make sure that the investors get their money back.
Along with Sen, his aide Arvind Singh Chauhan, also accused in the chit fund scam, was sent to 10-day police custody.
A large number of Congress supporters, agents of the collapsed chit fund company and investors protested on the Baruipur court premises when Sen was brought for production. Sen and his aide faced noisy demonstration again when he was coming out of the court.
Police resorted to lathicharge to control the irate protesters. In the melee, one person suffered head injuries.
As the Saradha Group’s main office is situated at Baruipur and a large chunk of its investors resided in the poor hinterland of the district, the police had anticipated trouble threw an elaborate security blanket around the court.
Asked about the reason for his company’s downfall, Sen said a few of his trusted employees were to blame for the collapse.
