The Congress on Friday staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha in protest against Speaker Sumitra Mahajan failing to give any assurance regarding its demand that BJP member Virendra Singh must either apologise or be suspended for his “extremely objectionable and derogatory” remarks against Nehru-Gandhi family.

Trinamool Congress, RJD and JD(U) members also staged a walkout in solidarity with the grand old party. The protest was prompted by Bhardoi MP repeating his remarks against Rahul Gandhi and other members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, even after the Speaker as well as the government had on Thursday disapproved of his statement and described it as “wrong”.

“He should either tender an apology or you suspend him,” Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge urged the Speaker. The request was rejected.
