Two Dalit professors suspended from the University of Hyderabad for having police cases against them have gone on a relay hunger strike seeking justice.

The teachers, Prof K Y Ratnam and Assistant Professor Tathagath Sengupta, face police cases in their alleged role in instigating students to attack the vice-chancellor’s lodge in the UoH campus on March 2.

The UoH Executive Council suspended them on Monday as rules specify that faculty members facing police cases cannot be allowed to teach.

Support for the suspended teachers, who went on with their hunger strike for the second day on Wednesday, came from several academic institutions across the country.

The university has said that the suspension would come for automatic review within 90 days.
