Chennai: Train services between various destinations in Southern and Central Tamil Nadu from Chennai and vice-versa were severely affected on Monday after Southern Railway suspended traffic between Vikravandi and Mundiyampakkam due to overflowing of water on a bridge.

Nearly 50 trains were affected with over 15 trains between Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Thanjavur, and Karaikudi and vice-versa, including Vande Bharat Express, were cancelled.

Other trains were either short terminated at Villupuram/Virudhachalam stations or diverted to reach Chennai Egmore or Tambaram through Arakkonam.

Traffic on bridge no. 452 (between Vikravandi and Mundiyampakkam) was suspended on the wee hours of Monday after water began to rise above the danger level, Southern Railway officials said.

The development caused massive disruption in train services between Chennai and Southern Tamil Nadu districts.

Four Vande Bharat Express services between Chennai-Tirunelveli and Chennai-Nagercoil and vice-versa, Tejas Express between Chennai-Madurai and vice-versa, and other day trains connecting Chennai with various destinations in southern and Central Tamil Nadu and vice-versa were cancelled.

Meanwhile, though Cyclone Fengal weakened into a deep depression and later into a depression, the magnitude of the destruction caused by it began to reveal on Monday.

Entire north Tamil Nadu was lashed with extremely rainfall with at least 20 vehicles being washed away in Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district.
