Cyclone Fengal gifts the chill to Bengaluru

Bengaluru: With Cyclone Fengal wreaking havoc in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, skies also turned gloomy in Bengaluru on Sunday. Many parts of the city received light to moderate rainfall throughout the day. 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cold weather with moderate rainfall for the city for three more days. 

The IMD's Bengaluru city observatory recorded 14.4 mm of rainfall with thunderstorms, HAL airport 20.5 mm and Kempegowda International Airport 2.2 mm, respectively, according to the IMD. 

According to the IMD’s meteorological centre, the city is very likely to see cloudy skies with a maximum and minimum temperature of 23 degree Celsius and 19 degree Celsius, respectively. 

CS Patil, IMD Scientist ‘E’, attributed the reduced maximum temperature to the cyclonic storm Fengal over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. °

“Since there is complete cloud cover, the maximum temperature won’t rise and is likely to be 24-25 degrees Celsius. This is expected to be there for two more days,” said N Puviarasan, Scientist ‘F’ and head of the meteorological centre. 

However, after two days, fog and mist is likely to continue during early morning hours in some areas and maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be between 26 degrees Celsius and 18 degrees Celsius, respectively. 

He said that Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, and Chamarajanagar have been issued a yellow alert on Monday and Tuesday ahead of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall forecasts. 

According to Puviarasan, winter is expected to begin in Bengaluru and South Interior Karnataka after December 15.

“Since the northeast winds are continuing, the effects of winter will most likely be felt after December 15. Because of the cyclone, we are now getting northeasterly winds from the bayside,” he said. 

Bal Bhavan flower show extended

The Horticulture Department has decided to extend the flower show for children at Cubbon Park’s Bal Bhavan by two days due to pleasant weather followed by light rains. 

Kusuma G, Deputy Director of Horticulture, said that the flowers remained intact and hundreds of visitors were seen clicking pictures with their umbrellas at the flower show. “Since the flowers remained fresh and visitors seemed to enjoy the show despite the rains, we have decided to keep it on,” she said.
