The mortal remains of Lt Col Bikramjit Singh, second-in-command of the 16 Cavalry unit, who died while countering terrorists in Samba on Thursday, were consigned to flames with full military honors in Chandigarh on Friday.
His remains were received at Chandimandir Military Station on Thursday. The bereaved family, including Singh’s eight-year-old daughter, were inconsolable. Lt Col Bikramjit Singh displayed commitment beyond the call of duty, conspicuous courage, bravery and devotion to duty in the face of terrorist attack, the Army said on Friday.
On the day of the ill-fated incident, Singh immediately responded. He reached the spot where the terrorists had entered the garrison and organised his men to counter the attack. In the ensuing fight, the officer received grievous injuries to which he succumbed. He is survived by his wife and daughter.
Singh was cremated with full military honours and gun salute. Lt Gen Philip Compose, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Command and a number of senior Army and civilian dignitaries were present to lay the wreaths and honour the martyr. Wreaths were also laid on behalf of Governor of Punjab, Chief Minister of Punjab, the Chief of Army Staff, and other civil dignitaries.
