Hyderabad: In a shocking incident in Nizamabad, a constable was stabbed to death by a habitual offender on Friday night. The deceased, Constable E Pramod (42) of Nizamabad’s Central Crime Station (CCS), had gone to Hashmi Colony along with his nephew to apprehend Sheikh Riyaz (24), who was accused of stealing a two-wheeler.

After being detained, Riyaz was made to sit in the middle of the motorcycle, with Pramod driving. According to town police, when they were nearing Vinayaknagar, Riyaz allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the constable in the chest. Pramod’s nephew tried to intervene but was also attacked.

Soon after, two unidentified men arrived on a two-wheeler and attempted to help Riyaz escape. CCS Sub-Inspector Vitthal reached the spot and rushed the injured duo to Nizamabad Government General Hospital (GGH). However, doctors declared Pramod brought dead, while his nephew’s condition is stated to be stable.

Taking serious note of the incident, Telangana DGP B Shivadhar Reddy directed Nizamabad Police Commissioner P Sai Chaitanya to form special teams to trace and arrest the accused. A statement from the DGP’s office said the investigation was being pursued on top priority and strict action would be taken against those responsible.

Constable Pramod is survived by his wife and three children. Officials have urged citizens to share any information regarding the accused, as security across the district has been tightened to apprehend Riyaz and his two accomplices.

“He is a regular offender. What prompted him to commit this crime can be known only after his arrest,” a police official said. The DGP ordered an intensive search operation based on available evidence to ensure his immediate capture.

Nizamabad Police Commissioner P. Sai Chaitanya told reporters that eight teams have been formed to track down the accused. “Even auto-rickshaws did not stop when our Sub-Inspector requested them to take the injured constable to the hospital,” he added.

Police said the accused has a history of involvement in robbery, dacoity, and murder cases.
