Minimum temperatures continued to hover below the freezing point in the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region on Saturday, with the Met office predicting dry weather for the next 24 hours.
A Met department official said Srinagar recorded a low of -2.9 degrees Celsius, slightly up from the previous night’s -3.5 degrees. The minimum temperature in the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir plummeted to -8 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam, a tourist resort which serves as a base camp during the annual Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of -6.8 degrees Celsius, he said.
Kargil and Leh towns in the frontier region of Ladakh continued to be the coldest in the state, with lows of -16.6 and -15.2 degrees Celsius, respectively, said the official.
Kashmir witnessed a dry winter this year, with just 7 mm snowfall recorded during “Chalai Kalan”, the harshest 40-day period of cold which starts on December 21 and ends on January 30.
