With the death of an injured woman at Sion Hospital in Mumbai and recovery of a child's body from the debris at the site, the death toll in the building collapse at Shil Phata area in the district reached 74 this evening.

According to Regional Disaster Management Control (RDMC) sources, the mishap left 74 people dead of which 33 are men, 23 women and 18 children.
Of the 59 injured, 36 have been admitted to hospitals in Thane, Kalwa and Mumbra. The seriously injured have been shifted to JJ and Sion Hospitals in Mumbai.

At the collapse site, a survivor identified as Shabnam told reporters that she had received a call on her mobile phone from a young teacher around 3 PM yesterday saying she was trapped alongwith six-seven students, but lost contact thereafter.

The fate of the teacher and students is still not known.
National Disaster Response Force, alongwith local police and civic administration, was engaged in rescue operations.

The illegal structure, which was under-construction, collapsed on Thursday.

Meanwhile, suspended Deputy Municipal Commissioner Deepak Chavan was arrested in connection with the Mumbra building collapse case, police said.

The total number of those arrested has risen to 3, they said, adding that some more people are likely to be taken into custody.
