As the hunt for the fourth man in Sunday night’s gang-rape continued, a city court sent three of the accused to police custody on Wednesday.

Senior police officials said that a local court remanded Arnab Bera, Sourav De and Sukhendu Nag to 14 days’ police custody. All three, along with the absconding fourth man, are drivers of pool cars contracted by top IT firms. Officials said that while all three have confessed to their crime, the police have zeroed in on the fourth associate, who is likely to be apprehended soon.

On Sunday, the four men reportedly abducted a 25-year-old woman, who danced at a bar in east Kolkata, and took turns to rape her in a moving vehicle. They drove the car to a secluded spot at the upcoming township of Rajarhat New Town, close to Salt lake Sector V, the city’s IT hub. At around 4 am on Monday, they dumped the unconscious woman near Salt Lake.

The police traced them down to Haroa in North 24 Parganas, tracking Arnab’s cell phone tower location, after a civic police volunteer identified him from a sketch.

Meanwhile, National Commission for Women chairperson Lalitha Kumarmangalam said that they have taken suo motu cognisance and the commission is initiating its own inquiry.
