Though FDI in multi-brand retail is yet to be discussed in Parliament, the Trinamool Congress on Tuesday criticised in the Lok Sabha the UPA government’s decision to open up the sector to overseas capital.
TMC MP Saugata Roy, who was the Minister of State for Urban Development till his party pulled out of the UPA coalition on September 21, sought to take advantage of the Rule 199 (1) of the Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha and read out a statement to explain the reasons behind his resignation.
Roy alleged that his statement was “severely edited and revised” before he was allowed by P C Chacko, who was then in the chair in the Lok Sabha, to read it out. He, however, deviated from the approved text to criticise the government’s decisions on FDI, diesel price hike and cap on subsidised LPG cylinders. Chacko asked Roy to stick to the approved text and ruled that critical remarks made by him should be expunged from the records of the House. “You should not be so severe in editing and revising my statement. After all, I am no longer a minister. Let me speak out,” Roy told Chacko.
