A day after more than 100 girls in Neyveli fell ill after consuming contaminated eggs served in midday meal, teams attached to the Tamil Nadu social welfare department, including Nutritious Noon Meal Programme Minister B Valarmathi, on Friday conducted surprise checks at several nutritious meal centres across the state.

The minister and the officials checked the quality of food served in midday meals. They also spoke to students. Sources in the state secretariat said the minister suspended three anganwadi staff at a city school for not reporting to work on time.

“During our checking process we found that the food served to the children was according to the government norms,” said a senior social welfare department official.
The official said the government has instructed all centres to maintain a proper attendance register and ensure appropriate storage facilities in all nutritious meal centres.

Meanwhile, most of the students who were admitted to NLC hospital after consuming contaminated eggs on Thursday, have been discharged.
