Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu welcomed Karnataka’s appeal in the Supreme Court against the acquittal of Chief Minister J Jayalalitha in an illegal wealth case.

“It is not just my expectation, but expectation of all people that Karnataka will appeal against the verdict,” DMK President M Karunanidhi said.

DMK sources also said the party will decide on exercising its right to implead in the case.

PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss, who had earlier written to Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah urging him to appeal against the state’s high court verdict acquitting Jayalalitha, said the apex court must take up the case soon and deliver the judgement.

“If the Supreme Court refuses to take up the case immediately, Karnataka government should appeal for a stay on the high court judgement,” Dr Ramadoss said, adding that Jayalalitha has lost the right to continue as chief minister.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president EVKS Elangovan, CPI(M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan and CPI national secretary D Raja have also welcomed the appeal against Jayalalitha’s acquittal.
