The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday approached the Supreme Court seeking review of the May 13 judgment prohibiting publishing photographs of political leaders and ministers, except the President, Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India in government advertisements.

The petition claimed that the Supreme Court verdict disregarded equal share of power enjoyed by the Centre and states, besides ignoring federal structure based on grounds of “parity” between the two.

Right to publish
Urging the court to set aside the judgment, the state government contended that the party in power has the right to publish the chief minister’s photograph in government advertisements showing its achievements.

The apex court had ordered that no photograph of top executives and political leaders except that of President, Prime Minister and Chief Justice of India would be published in government advertisements, holding that the public money cannot be used to develop “personality cult”.
