Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Monday sought financial assistance of Rs 1,500 crore from the Centre for carrying out rehabilitation works in the rain-affected areas.

"I explained the rain and flood situation in the state, especially the damage caused in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram district. He (PM) assured that he would provide adequate relief assistance," said Palaniswami.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolence to the families who lost their loved ones in the recent rain and floods in Chennai and other parts of the state.

"I have assured the state government of all possible support", Modi said.
