Fresh trouble seems to be brewing for Greenpeace India, with the Registrar of Societies in Tamil Nadu shooting off a show-cause notice to it, asking why its registration should not be cancelled.

The NGO, which is already facing trouble with the Union Home Ministry over the utilisation of foreign donation and violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), was issued the notice on June 16 after an inspection of its office in Chennai on June 3.

The inspection, which was conducted by officials of the Tamil Nadu government, was intended to look into the organisation's society status—the legal basis on which Greenpeace India Society’s main operations take place, said the NGO.

“Greenpeace India has been sent a show-cause notice threatening cancellation of its society registration due to questions over its operations and funding,” said a Greenpeace India statement.
