A month after the tragedy that left 69 people dead and hundred others injured, Shahana is running from pillar to post to get the compensation promised by the railway department.
Her father had fractured his legs in the accident and is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Shahana, who lives with her grandparents at Kolkata, had arrived at Fatehpur on Tuesday after being told by the railway officials that the name of her mother did not figure in the list of the dead.
Shock and dismay
To her shock and dismay, Shahana found that the officials had, by mistake, entered a wrong name in the post-mortem report of her mother. “Instead of Sakeena, her mother’s real name, the report mentions Shabnam which is Shahana’s nickname,” the officials said.“The claim of compensation cannot be processed without correcting the name.
Fresh certificate
A corrected death certificate will have to be issued for the purpose,” they said. Shahana has given an application to the GRP for a fresh death certificate of her mother. “I have been assured by the officials that the defect will be rectified within a few days,” Shahana said.
It seems the poor girl’s agony of losing her kin is set to prolong through official apathy.
