The Supreme Court has directed Chennai-based Selvam Education Trust to deposit Rs 2 crore in the apex court's registry as it failed to establish a functional medical college.

However, the court is yet to decide the extent of the trust's liability in failing to establish the college in Odisha's Kalahandi district.

The trust was to set up the medical college in public- private partnership mode after entering into an agreement with the Western Odisha Development Council in 2004. After getting an aid of Rs 20 crore and 25 acres of land for free, the trust established Sardar Rajas Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre and admitted 100 students for MBBS course in 2013-14 and another 24 students next year.
