A festive air prevailed at the Lalita Kala Thoranam here where a few hundred couples were married off. The newly married couples were blessed by Governor N D Tiwari and Chief Minister K Rosaiah apart from several ministers and public representatives.

However, the response to the fifth phase of Kalyanamastu was poor compared to the earlier programmes with the TTD-set target of 1000 couples in each district falling far short. The programme was not held in the four flood affected districts of Kurnool, Mahbubnagar, Krishna and Guntur.

Those wanting to get married have to apply a week ahead of the date of marriage. The TTD fixed the ‘muhurtam’ and gifted a gold mangalasutram, silver toe rings, a set of wedding clothes to the couple and an attendant. The newly married couple will also be given a free darshan at the Balaji temple in Tirumala. The marriage was followed by a wedding feast for the couples and their family.
