One more militant was killed in an overnight encounter in Machil sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday.

A defence spokesman said the fresh exchange of firing took place on Saturday evening after the combing operation team established contact with hiding militants in Machil, 110 km north of Srinagar.

“In the ongoing operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Macchal sector, which started early morning on June 20 in which an infiltration bid was foiled and one militant  killed, contact was once again established in the evening,” he said.

“At around late evening, the troops conducting the search discovered a militant hiding in the area. In the exchange of fire that followed, one more militant was killed, thus bringing the total number of militants killed to two,” he added. The spokesman said the operation is still on.

Sources said the visibility in the area is limited due to rain and dense fog. “The group of infiltrators was carefully tracked and cordoned off well before they could merge with the population. Intermittent exchange of fire continued throughout the night,” they said.

An army official told Deccan Herald that five to six militants were part of the infiltrating group, which sneaked into the LoC near Sardari Nar into the valley.

“The infiltrating militants opened fire from sophisticated weapons on troops near Jalandar Post, situated near thick jungles,” he added.
