Two militants belonging to a newly formed group were shot dead in an encounter with security forces at Rari village in North Garo Hills district. Three others were arrested, police said on Tuesday.

The two, identified as Y Stone and Rocky, were shot dead when they came around 3 pm to Rari, a village close to the Assam-Meghalaya border, to kidnap a well-known businessman of the area, police said.

Police said the two belonged to the newly formed militant outfit known as Achik National United Force. The police on Monday arrested three members of the outfit from Tura.

Acting on a tip-off that the two were approaching the house of the businessman, Meghalaya’s Special Weapons and Tactics commandos and CRPF’s COBRA commandos laid a trap. Police recovered an AK-47 rifle and a revolver from the dead.
