Alert engineers of the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation managed to avert yet another failure of the Northern Grid on Monday.

Power officials here said there was a massive power cut in Varanasi, Allahabad and Agra towns after the engineers detected a sharp drop in frequency of the grid, to around 10.48 MHz on Monday morning.

The Northern Region Load Despatch Center was immediately informed and power supply to these three towns was switched off to save the grid, officials said. Power supply was restored after one hour.

The UP power officials blamed tripping of three hydro-power units in Himachal Pradesh owing to a technical fault, for the crisis.
