Uphaar convict has to surrender soon: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to extend the deadline for the surrender of real estate baron Gopal Ansal.

Gopal was sentenced to one year’s jail term in the 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy case.
Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani submitted the plea before a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, which did not pass any order.

The court, however, agreed to consider his application on Thursday.

Gopal has an sought urgent hearing for his plea, seeking a modification of the February 9 order.

He was given time till Thursday to surrender. Jethmalani prayed for the matter to be heard after the Holi vacations as Gopal had to go out of station for two days.

A three-judge bench of the apex court had, by a 2:1 majority, partially allowed a review plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy, and had enhanced the jail term of Gopal from the six months and eight days that he has served during judicial custody to one year imprisonment.

Gopal (69) sought parity with his older brother Sushil Ansal (77), who was let off after serving the term he had already undergone, owing to his age and medical conditions, in the case.
