New Delhi: Shakti Dubey, a University of Allahabad alumni, has topped the Civil Services Examination 2024, while Commerce graduate from University of Baroda Harshita Goyal and Electronics engineer Dongre Archit Parag, an alumni of VIT Vellore, have emerged second and third, respectively, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced on Tuesday.

A total of 1,009 candidates -- 725 men and 284 women -- have qualified the examination and have been recommended by the Commission for appointment to various services. The top 25 candidates comprise 11 women and 14 men. In Civil Service Examination 2023, 1016 -- 664 men and 352 women -- were selected and in the top 25 candidates, 10 were women and 15 men.

The UPSC said the selections were made against 1,128 vacancies in IAS, IFS, IPS, Central Services Group 'A' and Group 'B' Services, which includes 180 vacancies in IAS and 147 in IPS.

Dubey, a graduate in Biochemistry, and Goyal, a B.Com degree holder from MS University of Baroda, qualified the examination with Political Science and International Relations as their optional subject. Parag, a B.Tech degree holder in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from VIT, Vellore had Philosophy as his optional subject.

Shah Margi Chirag, a computer engineer from Gujarat Technological University in Ahmedabad, secured fourth rank with Sociology as her optional subject, while Aakash Garg, another computer engineer from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi, came fifth with Sociology as his optional subject.

The top 25 candidates' educational qualifications include graduation in engineering, humanities, science, commerce, medical science, and architecture from premier institutions of the country such as IIT, NIT, VIT, JNU, University of Delhi, and University of Allahabad.

They also opted for a wide range of optional subjects in the written (main) examination, including anthropology, commerce and accountancy, geography, mathematics, philosophy, physics, political science and international relations, public administration, sociology, and literature of Tamil language.

The 1,009 selected candidates include 45 Persons with Benchmark Disability, comprising 12 orthopedically handicapped, eight visually challenged, 16 hearing impaired, and nine with multiple disabilities.

The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2024 was conducted on June 16, 2024. A total of 9,92,599 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 5,83,213 candidates actually appeared in the examination.

A total of 14,627 candidates qualified for appearance in the written (main) examination which was held in September, 2024. Out of these, 2,845 candidates qualified for the Personality Test of the examination.

The Civil Services Examination is conducted annually in three stages -- preliminary, main and interview -- by the UPSC.

The candidature of 241 recommended candidates has been kept provisional while the result of one candidate has been withheld. Another 230 successful candidates have been put on a reserve list, the UPSC said.

The UPSC has a ‘facilitation counter’ on its campus in Delhi and candidates can obtain information or clarification regarding their exams or recruitment on all working days between 10 am and 5 pm in person or over the phone by dialing 23385271/23381125/23098543.

The result is also available on the UPSC website -- www.upsc.gov.in – and the marks will be available on the website within 15 days from the date of declaration of the result, the UPSC added.
