Shakti Dubey has topped the examination which was attended by 5,83,213 candidates from across the country.</p><p>She qualified for the examination with political science and international relations as her optional subject.</p><p><strong>Who is topper Shakti Dubey</strong></p><p>Hailing from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, Dubey did her schooling and graduation from the same city. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Allahabad. </p><p>She later pursued postgraduation in Biochemistry from Banaras Hindu University.</p><p>In a mock <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQP7FvMuz0Y">interview</a> posted on YouTube by Chahal Academy, Dubey was seen saying that she has been preparing for UPSC CSE since 2018. </p><p><strong>What motivated Dubey to join civil services</strong></p><p>She also spoke about the support she received from her parents in the journey and what motivated her to join civil services. </p><p>"My father is in police service and I have seen him working. Initially I thought it was just a job but later during my time at BHU hostel, I realised that police or its vehicle make a person feel safe even if it’s late. I realised how a small power can bring a change for somebody and how public service at large is benefitting people. So this is how I was attracted to government service in the first place," Dubey said.</p><p>The top five successful candidates comprise three women and two men.</p><p>The civil services examination is conducted annually in three stages -- preliminary, main and interview -- by the UPSC to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.</p><p>The civil services (preliminary) examination 2024 was conducted on June 16 last year. A total of 9,92,599 candidates applied for this examination, out of which 5,83,213 candidates actually appeared in the test.</p><p>A total of 14,627 candidates qualified for appearance in the written (main) examination, which was held in September 2024. Out of these, 2,845 candidates qualified for the personality test or interview, which were held between January 7 and April 17 this year.</p><p>Of them, 1,009 candidates -- 725 men and 284 women -- have been recommended by the UPSC for appointment to various services.</p><p>Out of the total successful candidates, 335 are from the general category, 109 from the economically weaker sections, 318 from other backward classes, 160 from scheduled castes and 87 from scheduled tribes, according to a statement issued by the commission.</p><p>The government has reported 1,129 vacancies -- 180 in IAS, 55 in IFS, 147 in IPS, 605 posts in different central Group A services and 142 in Group B services -- to be filled through the civil services examination 2024, it said.</p><p><em>(With PTI inputs)</em></p>
