United States Ambassador to India Richard Verma and US Permanent Representative to United Nations Samantha Power visited Delhi’s largest red-light area GB Road on Thursday.

Accompanied by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal, they met sex workers at a brothel. Verma tweeted about the visit, which was later re-tweeted by the US Embassy India.

Verma and Power had requested Maliwal to accompany them to explain the ground realities of the area which is base to around 1,000 sex workers. Agreeing to the request, Maliwal had an half hour meeting with the ambassador. Rishi Kant of NGO Shakti Vahini facilitated the visit.

“In the meeting, the ambassadors were informed of the several issues concerning the red-light area including the challenges faced by the Delhi government, Delhi Police and NGOs,” Maliwal told mediapersons.
