Lucknow: Former Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that his party was fighting a battle to save the Constitution even as he reiterated his allegations that the elections were being ‘stolen’.
‘’At first we guessed that there was something wrong with the election results but we got black and white evidence of vote chori after seeing the results of the Maharashtra and Haryana assembly polls,’’ Rahul said while addressing party workers at Harchandpur in his LS constituency of Raebareli.
Rahul arrived in Raebareli on a two-day visit on Wednesday.
He said that the people were deprived of their rights. ‘’Congress workers are brave like lions…we all are fighting to save the Constitution,’’ he added.
Earlier Congress workers raised slogans like ‘Vote chor, gaddi chod’ (vote thieves leave power) when Rahul’s cavalcade reached Bachrawan in the constituency.
The Congress leader later addressed a meeting of the ‘Prajapati’ (an OBC community) community during which he thanked the members of the community for supporting him in the LS polls.
The Congress leader was accorded a rousing reception by the party leaders and workers upon his arrival in Raebareli.
Rahul, however, had to face protests by UP minister Dinesh Pratap Singh during his visit. Singh, along with supporters embarked on a dharna at Harchandpur and raised slogans like ‘go back Rahul Gandhi’.
The police had a tough time in persuading the minister and his supporters to call off the protest. The BJP workers also had a scuffle with the cops.
A Samajwadi Party (SP) leader had put up a poster in the town terming the trio of Rahul, SP president Akhilesh Yadav and RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav likening them with ‘Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh’.
