The deceased were identified as Nitin Kumar and Chandrashekhar, who were residents of Jammu and worked as labourers, police sources said.

The injured, who included a pilgrim, were admitted to the primary health centre at Gaurikund. The condition of one of the injured is said to be critical.

According to the police, the incident happened near Junglechatti along the trek route when a landslide occurred at around 11 in the morning. The victims who fell into a deep gorge were rescued by the SDRF team which reached there after the incident.

Barely three days back a landslide had occurred on the Kedarnath trek killing one pilgrim and leaving two others injured. Incidentally the landslide had taken place at the same spot.

The incident also comes close on the heels of a chopper crash near Gaurikund on Sunday killing seven people.

Sources said that many areas of the state have been experiencing pre-monsoon rains for the past few days triggering landslides at several places. The Met office has sounded an alert of heavy rains in Pithoragarh and Bageshwar districts.
