The final round of consultations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top BJP leaders have begun, with the party’s parliamentary board likely to meet within the next two days to pick a candidate for the vice president’s post.

BJP president Amit Shah met RSS general secretary Suresh Bhaiyyaji Joshi and party pointsman Krishna Gopal to shortlist a nominee to take on the Opposition’s Gopalkrishna Gandhi in the August 5 poll.

The board — a 12-member body headed by Modi — may be convened as early as Friday to announce the candidate if the consultation process is over, party sources said.

The last date for filing nomination is July 18. A day before, on July 17, polling for the Presidential election will take place, leaving little time for the party to wind up the procedure, explained BJP sources.
