WB: CPM hints at long-term Cong ties

Within days of working out an “understanding” with each other over seat sharing for the forthcoming Assembly elections, the Left-Congress combine is now looking towards a brighter future.

Boosted by the arrangement, the state CPM leadership now believes that the unofficial alliance could leave a mark on the ballot and could join hands if they get a chance to form the government.

The idea of a post-poll alliance was hinted at by CPM Politburo member and MP, Md Salim, who said the combine is now looking ahead. He made it apparent that while the polls in April-May are of immediate concern, the arrangement might go beyond the elections.

Salim further hinted that they could even be looking at a tie-up before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “We’re looking for a long-term, agenda-driven understanding with all democratic and secular forces except Trinamool Congress. Of course, the aim of this unity of Left with democratic and secular forces is to counter Trinamool Congress at the state level and BJP at the national level,” Salim said. He, however, refused to clarify his thoughts, stating that the media was free to draws its own inferences.
