A Pakistani citizen living in Canada was extradited to the US to face charges for plotting an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at a Jewish centre in New York City around the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks, according to US officials.
Taking to his official X account, FBI Director Kash Patel said that Muhammad Shahzeb Khan tried to enter the US to carry out the attack and planned an ISIS-inspired mass shooting on October 7, 2024, around the first anniversary of the 2023 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel.
"Major news… earlier this afternoon, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, a Pakistani citizen residing in Canada, was extradited to the United States on charges of attempting to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to commit acts of terrorism," Patel wrote in the post.
Here is what we know about Muhammad Shahzeb Khan and his plans so far:
Muhammad Shahzeb Khan is a 20-year-old Pakistani citizen living in Canada who is also known as Shahzeb Jadoon.
Khan was extradited to the US on Tuesday in connection with an indictment filed in the Southern District of New York.
All in support of ISIS, Khan had made plans on using automatic weapons to kill as many members of the Jewish community as possible.
Khan had claimed that if his plan succeded, it would have been the "largest attack on US soil since 9/11".
He tried to travel from Canada to New York to carry out the mass shooting at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn.
He announced his support for ISIS by posting on social media, he even distributed ISIS propaganda videos and literature in the year 2023.
Khan said he had been actively attempting to create "a real offline cell" of ISIS supporters to carry out a "coordinated assault" in a US city using AR-15-style rifles to "target Israeli Jewish chabads. scattered all around" the city.
He also repeatedly instructed the undercover officers to obtain AR-15-style assault rifles, ammunition, and other materials to carry out the attacks, including "some good hunting [knives] so we can slit their throats."
According to his plan, October 7 and 11 were the "best days for targeting Jews".
Khan changed the target location to New York City around August 20 and decided to target the Jewish centre in Brooklyn.
The extradition of Khan comes right after members of the multi-party delegations from India travelled to 33 world capitals to communicate the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism following the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor and conveying India's "strong stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the delegations upon their arrival. "Met members of the various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India's commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We are all proud of the manner in which they put forward India's voice," Modi said in a post on X.
The government had sent the multi-party delegations to portray a message of national unity in the fight against terrorism
