As stories of heroism by Army soldiers in flood-ravaged Uttarakhand continue to pour out and invite admiration, the sheer grit manifested by a woman Captain of the Army Medical Corps (AMC) has won many hearts.

Capt (Dr) Febha Susan trekked 10-km in wilderness on the less travelled serpentine muddy tracks in rain to help two women deliver their babies. It was call that Capt Susan never thought even once to remotely ignore. A team led by Captain R Patil, engaged in relief rescue operations, got the information that two pregnant women required urgent medical attention. A lady doctor was desperately needed and Capt Patil was quick to requisition the doctor.

Captain Susan was dropped in a chopper to the nearest location from where she could reach the women undergoing severe labour pains. As the location was at least 10-km away from the women in distress, Capt Susan trekked all the miles for several hours with her team to the village. The deliveries were carried out in a make shift medical center, said sources.

Saraswati Devi, one of the mothers who delivered a baby in Sabola Area of floor-hit Uttarakhand was evacuated to Dharchula on Monday. Captain Susan helped deliver two babies- one a baby boy and the other a baby girl.

According to sources, both the newborn babies and their mothers are in good health.
