A woman passenger travelling to Patna by the 12394 on New Delhi-Rajendra Nagar Sampoorna Kranti Express delivered a baby in the toilet of the sleeper compartment.

The train, which has no stoppages between Delhi and Patna, was about to cross Aligarh (in UP) when the woman, who was in the toilet, developed labour pain.

Eventually, she delivered the baby in the toilet. But her condition started to deteriorate as she was bleeding profusely.

An elderly relative, who was travelling with her, then pleaded with other woman passengers to help her. Within minutes, many women travelling on the S-6 coach joined hands in resuscitating her. But even then, her condition showed no sign of improvement.

The medical kit in the bogie was searched upon, but it did not have the requisite medicines. In the meantime, someone informed the control room, following which the railways made an immediate arrangement of doctors and nursing staff at the next junction—Aligarh.

But the woman refused to get down from the train. “I am so poor that I can’t afford medical treatment,” an eyewitness, who was travelling on the same train, quoting her told Deccan Herald here on Monday.

Eventually, fellow passengers contributed money and soon a corpus of Rs 9,000 was handed over to the woman’s relative for further treatment.

A medical team at Aligarh station then escorted her to the hospital where the condition of mother and the baby is said to be stable now.
