The first stage of the Tour in the Alps, an 189-km ride from Les Rousses to Morzine went to last year's runner-up Andy Schleck. The Luxembourg climber won the eighth stage ahead of Olympic champion Samuel Sanchez of Spain and Dutchman Robert Gesink.
World champion Cadel Evans seized the overall lead with a 20-second gap over Schleck.
