Fifth seed Jayaram, a quarterfinalist at the World Championships earlier this month, squandered a first game lead and lost 12-21 21-14 21-16 to second seed Sho Sasaki of Japan in a 52-minute match.

Compatriot Gurusaidutt, seeded 12th, was no match for top seed Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam as the Indian was brushed aside by the world number seven 21-5 21-9 in a lop-sided contest.

All the women's singles players -- Aditi Mutatkar, PV Sindhu and Arundhati Pantawane -- had crashed out of the tournament last night.
