The right-handed batsman checked in at the hospital just after 7.00 am and was discharged around 1.00 pm. Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon Kishore Nayak, who conducted the surgery, said:
“Dravid had suffered a depressed fracture of the left cheek bone (zygomatic arch bone) and this was corrected using a standard open approach which took about 20-25 minutes.” Nayak clarified that Dravid hasn’t fractured his jaw as was perceived.
“It’s not actually the jaw that he had hurt, it’s the cheek bone and the injury was causing obstruction and movement of his jaw,” said Nayak. Though the injury in itself is not of serious nature, Dravid has been advised not to play cricket for the next two-three weeks. “He can actually resume his normal daily activities in two-three days. But we have advised him not to play cricket or for that matter any contact sports for about 2-3 weeks as even a slight impact on the injured part could aggravate it further,” Nayak pointed out.
The 37-year-old will be reassessed for fitness on a regular basis. Incidentally, Nayak had also treated Anil Kumble who had fractured his lower jaw while batting against the West Indies in 2002.
