England skipper Joe Root and head coach Chris Silverwood are said to have approached match referee Javagal Srinath, seeking umpiring consistency from the third umpire C Shamshuddin during the third Test against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera.

The Test, which concluded in two days with India winning by ten wickets, saw Root vent his frustration to on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Nitin Menon on numerous occasions.

“The England captain and head coach spoke with the match referee after play,” an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) spokesperson told visiting journalists.

“The captain and head coach acknowledged the challenges the umpires faced and asked respectfully that in making any decisions there was consistency in the process. The match referee said the captain was asking the right questions of the umpires.”

The issue started on the opening day when Shubman Gill nicked the ball to Ben Stokes at second slip. England reckoned the ball carried but without conclusive evidence in replays, the third umpire turned down the appeal.

England then put up a collective disappointment with the umpiring when Rohit Sharma was stumped by Ben Foakes off of Jack Leach. Shamshuddin ruled it not out.
