“There is plenty of scope for improvement,” said Akbar on the sidelines of the Amaron Karting Challenge in Bangalore on Sunday.

“See, there’s not going to be a sudden increase in the number of drivers, but there will be more sponsors willing to come and wet their beaks in motor sports.”

Touted as one of India’s most promising drivers, Armaan Ebrahim -- Akbar’s son -- has been tipped to land a spot in the 2011 GP2 series after a good show in the Formula Two championship in 2009, but Akbar was unsure of that shaping up.

“The tests cost us a lot. To take part in the event it’s going to be a lot more money. If GP2 does not work out, I’m going to ask Armaan to take up the Indylights (precursor to the Indy500).

“There is a lot of market for Indian drivers in the US, and plus, he will be the first Indian driver in the Indy500.That for him is a step in the right direction,” added the driver-turned-coach who is also the president of Meco Motorsport .
