Rain threat at Benoni

Heavy rains and soggy outfield could mar India’s two-day tour game against South African Invitation XI at Willowmoore Park, Benoni, starting on Friday.

Indians were hoping big on this lone practice game to warm themselves up ahead of the two-match Test series, after their batsmen and bowlers came up with a below-par show in the three one-dayers. India lost the one-day series 2-0, while they didn’t get a chance to bat in the third ODI due to rain at the SuperSport Park on Wednesday.

“We have had some very good net sessions after coming here. I think we have got some 5-6 net sessions where we had good practice bowlers also. We have spent decent amount of time on the cricket field and the preparation has been up to the mark so far,” said Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of the side match.

But by the look of it, Indians may have to settle for more net session ahead of the first Test at the Wanderers, Johannesburg, beginning on December 18.

Benoni has seen nearly 800 millimeters of rain in the last three weeks, and the Willowmoore Park too has come under the fury of rain, leaving the ground staff with a tough task of preparing the venue for the match.
