A fighting half-century from Dhawal Kulkarni helped Mumbai put on a total of 173 all out in the first innings at tea against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal on Thursday.

On the opening day at the Vidarbha Cricket Association, Karnataka captain R Vinay Kumar led from the front and finished with 6/34, including a hat-trick. Vinay’s deadly first spell of 6-2-10-4 rocked Mumbai and they appeared like folding below 150.

However, at 103/9, Dhawal (75) and Shivam Malhotra forged a 70-run partnership.
