Indian motorsport received a boost as the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) nominee Gautam Singhania won the spot in the FIA World Motor Sports Council on Friday.

At the FIA's Annual General Assemble here, Singhania was one among 14 member who were elected from a list of 22 contenders. Apart from Singhania, President of the FMSCI, Akbar Ebrahim, was designated as the Deputy Titular and will represent the country in the council.

Expressing his delight, Ebrahim said: "I am really glad that Mr Gautam Singhania has been elected. It gives us great satisfaction to note that an Indian will be a board member of the FIA World Motor Sports Council. I would like to thank Jean Todt, President FIA, and all the FIA General Assembly members for all the support extended to India, the FMSCI and to Gautam Singhania."

Also, former Ferrari boss Jean Todt was re-elected as the President of the FIA for a third successive term at the event on Friday evening.

The 71-year-old, who took over as chief of the Paris-based FIA in 2009, was elected unopposed. As FIA chief Todt has backed the creation of the Formula E championship, and the sale of F1's commercial rights to Liberty Media.

In 2015 Todt was named United Nations special envoy for road safety.
