Heavy rain yesterday had left huge puddles on the playing surface and, despite work by the groundstaff, umpires Rudi Koertzen and Aleem Dar ruled the ground was unfit for play despite the fact Edgbaston was bathed in sunshine this morning.

The umpires were due to hold an inspection at the scheduled start time of 11am local time (1000 GMT).

England lead the five-match series 1-0 after their 115-run win in the second Test at Lord's.
